As a mathematician interested in visual patterns making diagrams and images quickly became an important part of my work. Yet I was frustrated that the informational quality of a figure was always more important that its aesthetic quality. The suggestion to make artwork reversed this order and started me on the path to create work using and illustrating mathematical ideas. Much of my work is initially digital due to the ease in which technical ideas can be created and manipulated on a computer. The trick is then to work out how the cold precision of the system can be brought into reality. For this I use a variety of computer controlled machines, often using custom software. From a standard inkjet printer through laser cutting to CNC milling. Trying to use materials that give character and life to the objects produced. The properties of the material and manufacturing methods then provide a powerful feedback into the abstract design process.
